Chin Hair in Women: Possible Causes to Check

It is not unusual for women to notice a few hairs on the chin. In most instances, they are only apparent when the face is examined closely in the mirror and are not a cause for concern.

Chin hair in women: when to seek advice

Age and genetics are the most frequent explanations, although other causes warrant particular attention. American dermatologist Dendy Engelman told the American magazine "Glamour" that women should remain vigilant: chin hair can indicate a significant imbalance within the body and should always be checked.

If there is no underlying condition, unwanted chin hair can be removed by waxing or made less noticeable by bleaching. For a longer-term option, laser hair removal may also be considered.

Possible causes of chin hair

The following are potential reasons that should be ruled out:

  • Genetics: If your grandmother or mother tends to develop hair on her chin, it is normal for the same thing to happen to you from a certain age.
  • Hormonal imbalance: Hormones are often responsible for unusual changes in the body. In this case, there may be an excess of male sex hormones, known as androgens.
  • Age: It is quite likely that more chin hair will develop in your 70s, 80s or 90s. It may also appear earlier, during the menopause.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome: Also known as PCOS, this condition has a considerable effect on reproductive health and hormones. Chin hair is not its only sign. If you also have irregular periods, difficulty losing weight and infertility, it is best to see a doctor.
  • Cushing's syndrome: This is caused by an excess of cortisol, the stress hormone, in the bloodstream. Certain medicines for arthritis or asthma may be behind it. Alongside increased hair growth, symptoms include stretch marks, weight gain and type 2 diabetes.
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia: This genetic condition is usually diagnosed at birth. It involves disorders in the functioning of the adrenal glands, which sit above the kidneys and produce hormones that are important to the body, including cortisol and aldosterone. It is extremely rare.
  • Pregnancy or contraception: Pregnancy has a major effect on any woman's body and can result in excessive hair growth. This is generally temporary and not a cause for concern.
