How Sweat Regulates Body Temperature

Sweating is often regarded as no more than an everyday nuisance, yet science shows that sweat is one of the human body's most sophisticated mechanisms. Recent research confirms that the process does far more than leave the skin wet on hot days: it is central to the regulation of body temperature.

Where does the sweat produced by the body come from?

Sweat is secreted by sweat glands, which are spread across almost the entire surface of the skin and are particularly numerous on the palms, soles of the feet and underarms. There are two principal types: eccrine glands, which account for most perspiration and are mainly triggered by heat, and apocrine glands, found in areas such as the underarms and groin and associated with emotional and hormonal stimuli.

These structures receive signals directly from the hypothalamus, the area of the brain that acts as the body's thermostat. When internal temperature rises, however slightly, the hypothalamus instructs the sweat glands to begin working, starting sweat production before the heat can become dangerous to internal organs.

Why is sweating so effective at cooling the body?

Evaporation is the process that enables the body to cool itself. Once it reaches the skin's surface, sweat draws heat from the body in order to change from a liquid into vapour, removing thermal energy as it does so. It is this physical principle-not simply making the skin damp-that lowers internal temperature during exercise or exposure to heat.

What does sweat contain besides water?

Although it consists mostly of water, sweat also contains other substances with particular roles in the body. Understanding its composition helps explain why heavy sweating can lead to cramps and fatigue if losses are not replaced properly:

  • Sodium and potassium, electrolytes essential to muscle and nerve function
  • Urea, a waste product of protein metabolism excreted in small amounts
  • Lactic acid, found in greater concentrations during intense physical exertion
  • Ammonia, released in trace quantities alongside other nitrogen-containing compounds

It is the loss of these electrolytes-particularly during long training sessions or on very hot days-that underlies the recommendation to replace fluids with mineral salts rather than drinking only plain water.

Does sweating more indicate better physical fitness?

People with better cardiovascular fitness generally begin sweating earlier during exercise and produce more diluted sweat. This happens because a trained body activates its cooling system sooner, preventing internal temperature from rising excessively before the protective mechanism takes effect.

When does sweating suggest something is abnormal?

Excessive sweating unrelated to heat or physical activity, a condition known as hyperhidrosis, may be genetic in origin or linked to hormonal and neurological changes. At the other end of the scale, a complete inability to sweat, known as anhidrosis, presents a genuine risk of overheating because the body loses its main form of thermal protection.

Recognising these two extremes highlights that balanced perspiration signals a thermoregulatory system working as it should: neither too much nor too little.

A defence system operating without conscious awareness

The human body keeps its internal temperature within a narrow range, close to 37 degrees, even when faced with extreme external variations, and sweat is the main tool used in this continuous adjustment. The process is automatic, controlled by a nervous system that monitors internal temperature at every moment without requiring any conscious action.

Understanding this mechanism changes the way sweating is viewed in everyday life. Rather than being a discomfort to avoid, sweat is the response of a physiological system refined throughout human evolution to protect vital organs from overheating.
