When clinicians consider long-term calorie reduction, their main concern is rarely whether it can work. Instead, they worry that consuming less food could gradually reduce the vitamins and minerals people obtain from their diets.
One of the longest calorie-restriction studies in people has now addressed that concern more clearly than before. Cutting calories did not diminish diet quality; it improved it.
Calorie-restricted diets and ageing
For decades, calorie restriction has been shown to slow ageing in worms, flies, mice and monkeys. Establishing whether it has the same effect in humans has proved far more difficult, in part because researchers were unwilling to expose volunteers to a regimen that might cause malnutrition.
That issue shaped the design of CALERIE 2. Susan B. Racette, PhD, of Arizona State University (ASU), led the newest analysis, with her team examining what participants ate throughout two years of reduced calorie intake.
Conducted from 2007 to 2012 at three U.S. locations, CALERIE 2 allocated 218 healthy adults either to reduce calories by 25 percent or to continue eating normally for two years. Participants in the restriction group received dietitian coaching while retaining the freedom to select their own food.
Most participants were in their late thirties, and about seven in ten were women. None had obesity. On average, participants did not achieve the planned 25 percent reduction.
Across the two years, calorie intake fell by about 12 percent on average – substantially below the 25 percent goal. Even so, subsequent research found that this was enough to slow the rate at which the body ages.
What the food diaries showed
Food diaries were collected at the trial’s outset and at four further points during the following two years. Researchers entered every record into a nutrition database used by federal agencies.
Each meal was assessed for vitamins, minerals, fibre and the overall dietary pattern. As self-reported diaries can become inaccurate, the CALERIE 2 researchers compared them with participants’ actual day-to-day calorie expenditure.
A previous study had suggested that diet quality could be maintained during short-term calorie reductions. The larger concern was that this pattern might deteriorate gradually over a full two years. CALERIE 2 found otherwise.
Three measures pointed the same way
Racette’s team evaluated participants’ diets using three separate measures. The first assessed whether they consumed sufficient amounts of every nutrient.
The second examined how closely their meals followed federal healthy-eating recommendations. The third rated each diet according to its inflammatory potential.
All three measures changed in the same direction. Diet quality increased, while inflammation scores decreased. These patterns continued over two years, rather than reflecting a brief period of adherence followed by a return to previous habits.
The Healthy Eating Index, a measure of diet quality, rose by more than seven points on its own.
An increase of this kind normally occurs only after a deliberate dietary intervention, rather than from a gradual adjustment. Meanwhile, the dietary inflammation score shifted further towards an anti-inflammatory pattern.
Nutrient intake remained adequate
People in the restriction group took a daily multivitamin and calcium supplement as a safety measure.
However, food records indicated that these supplements were not carrying the main burden: most volunteers met their nutrient goals through food itself.
“Diet quality improved and nutritional adequacy was maintained during a moderate calorie restriction intervention designed to enhance healthspan,” Racette and colleagues wrote.
A separate blood-sample analysis also showed that the group was ageing more slowly at the cellular level.
Why eating less may help
Researchers are still investigating why modest calorie reductions could slow ageing. One possibility is that when less food enters the body, cells may generate fewer unstable molecules that contribute to oxidative stress.
These molecules can harm DNA, proteins and cell membranes. They have been linked with cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases that develop slowly over time.
A urine study involving CALERIE 2 participants confirmed that the restriction group had lower levels of these molecules.
The urine findings cannot establish whether lowering these molecules led to slower ageing, or whether both changes simply occurred together. The researchers view them as related, but do not argue that one caused the other.
What this could mean
The latest result addresses a concern that has followed calorie-restriction research for decades. A moderate reduction – within the 10 to 15 percent range that most volunteers ultimately reached – did not strip nutrients from diets. It improved them.
The diets were not merely lighter. For clinicians, this alters the discussion around healthy ageing. Recommendations to eat less may no longer need to be qualified by concerns about gradual vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Researchers also gain a different model: calorie restriction as a sustained, manageable practice rather than crash dieting, with measurable benefits for how the body copes over time.
For people considering their own meals, the message is straightforward. Eating a little less, while giving some thought to what remains on the plate, may achieve more than weight control. It may discreetly improve everything else.
