In fitness forums, fasted training in the morning is often treated as an insider tip: supposedly, anyone who runs or lifts weights without breakfast will tap straight into their fat stores. It sounds plausible and can even feel good for some people – until dizziness, cravings and frustration get in the way. But what is really behind the hype around fasted training, and does it genuinely provide the hoped-for boost to fat loss?
Why the body uses more fat as fuel in the morning
After a night without food, carbohydrate stores in the liver and muscles are considerably reduced. Experts refer to this as lower glycogen stores. The seemingly obvious conclusion is that, with less sugar available, the body has to rely more heavily on fat as an energy source.
Insulin levels are also low in the morning. Insulin tends to promote the storage of nutrients, while a lower level makes it easier to release fat from stored reserves. This metabolic state is precisely what makes fasted training so appealing to many people.
