Demand for aesthetic procedures is increasingly moving towards a more natural look, with less exaggeration and greater appreciation of individual features. However, achieving subtle, balanced results means making safety the priority.
Below, dermatologist Dr Humberto Ponzio, a lecturer at Afya Medical Education in Porto Alegre, sets out the essential precautions for anyone considering facial filler and seeking to avoid risks.
1. Your history matters - a great deal
Tell your doctor if you had any aesthetic procedure 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Older permanent products used in the past, including PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) and silicone, remain in the skin and may react adversely to new hyaluronic acid applications.
2. The risks of permanent products
Permanent substances such as PMMA may cause complications and rejection even 10 years after they are injected. The filler remains there indefinitely, while your face continues to change, which can distort the result over time.
3. Ask for an “X-ray” of your face
It is now possible to have high-frequency dermatological ultrasound before any needle or cannula is injected. This scan maps the location of your arteries, veins and old fillers, helping the doctor avoid puncturing high-risk areas and causing necrosis.
4. Avoid a “one-size-fits-all” approach
Good facial harmonisation should assess your facial structure and restore volume lost over the years, while retaining your original features. Be wary of techniques that give everyone the same appearance, known as standardisation.
