How to care for men's grey hair: tips from Caval

Grey hair is no longer regarded simply as a sign of ageing; it has become part of many men's personal style. More and more people are choosing to embrace their silver strands, making this natural hair change an expression of personality. A few essential habits will keep the look consistently well groomed.

According to Lucas Cavalcanti, known as Caval and one of Brazil's most influential barbers, grey hair needs a daily care routine. “White hairs have different characteristics from pigmented hair. They are generally drier, more prone to frizz and can turn yellow easily without appropriate care. With a simple routine, it is possible to keep hair strong and make even more of this look,” he explains.

Prevent yellowing

One of the main concerns for people with white hair is the yellowing that may develop over time, particularly following exposure to sunlight, pollution, sand, salt water or frequent use of heated styling tools.

To prevent this effect, one recommended step is to use a toning shampoo once a week. “The product helps to keep the hair tone more attractive and even, but excessive use can dry out the hair. Ideally, it should be alternated with a hydrating shampoo,” Caval says.

Invest in hydration

Grey hair is often drier because the scalp produces less natural oil. The hair fibre also tends to have more open cuticles, making it easier to lose water and nutrients. This can leave hair rougher, weaker and more susceptible to frizz.

As head of the Caval Barbershop chain, Caval says that even a simple routine can make a difference. “It is worth investing in a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, as well as adding a weekly treatment mask. Products with nourishing properties help replenish lipids in the hair fibre, restoring softness, shine and frizz control,” he advises.

He also suggests using leave-in products, especially for those who wash their hair every day. “Finishing products form a protective film around the hair fibre, reducing moisture loss and shielding strands from damage caused by sun, wind and pollution,” he explains.

Haircut styles that enhance grey hair

Alongside daily care, selecting the right haircut can bring out white hair and give the overall look a more contemporary feel. As the barbering course leader at Instituto Embelleze, Caval says that cuts such as the fade and taper complement the natural texture of grey hair by creating gentle transitions between lengths. The undercut, meanwhile, emphasises the contrast between shorter sides and a longer top, bringing out the shine of white strands.

“For those who favour a more classic style, the side part with a fade is an excellent choice. It is a sophisticated, versatile cut that works very well in both professional settings and more relaxed occasions,” Caval notes.

For the expert, embracing grey hair does not mean neglecting its care. “White hair can convey elegance, personality and authenticity. The secret is to maintain a care routine and choose a cut that enhances each man's face shape and style,” he concludes.
